Private equity firm Calera Capital acquired a majority stake in ImageFIRST in November 2018, per PE Hub. The firm has continued investing in plant-level technology and pursuing acquisitions of smaller regional laundry operators to extend geographic reach. Calera's ownership brings capital for consolidation and operational upgrades while the existing management team runs day-to-day operations.

The primary moat is physical: 36 industrial-scale, HLAC-accredited processing plants with the permitting, sanitation infrastructure, and logistics routing density that would take a competitor years and significant capital to replicate. A second moat is stickiness — healthcare providers embed ImageFIRST into their daily operations and compliance documentation, creating switching costs.

The firm focuses on outpatient settings — physician practices, dental offices, surgery centers, urgent care clinics, and specialty practices — rather than large acute-care hospitals. This fragmented, high-volume customer base provides diversification and a recurring-revenue profile that is less concentrated than a hospitality or hospital-bed-only linen operation.
