Garry Tan is Founder and Managing Partner and drives final investment decisions. General Partners Brett Gibson and Jen Wolf source and lead deals. Tan's concurrent role as CEO of Y Combinator since 2023 means his time is split, but the partnership structure delegates significant sourcing autonomy to Gibson and Wolf on a day-to-day basis.

Garry Tan became CEO of Y Combinator in January 2023. While Y Combinator policies restrict Tan from investing personally in active batch companies before Demo Day, Initialized independently participates in the same ecosystem as a separate legal entity. The firm benefits from Tan's visibility into founder quality patterns and the YC network, but competes on equal footing with other venture firms for deals after Demo Day.

The firm explicitly focuses on pre-seed and seed-stage software companies. It does not operate a dedicated growth-stage fund, does not participate in pre-IPO rounds as a core strategy, and has not been active in buyouts, secondaries, or private credit. Growth-stage exposure comes only through pro-rata follow-on in existing portfolio companies.

Alexis Ohanian joined Initialized as a General Partner in the mid-2010s, bringing his Reddit co-founder credibility to the partnership. He departed in 2020 to launch his own venture firm, Seven Seven Six, which operates as an independent entity with a different investment thesis centered on community and long-duration holding periods. Ohanian retains no operational role at Initialized.
