Innovative Hematology was established in 1998 by Dr. Amy Shapiro, a hematologist who remains the organization's co-founder, CEO, and Medical Director. The entity functions as the financial and operational backbone of the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (IHTC), a non-profit specialty clinic serving patients with bleeding and clotting disorders. Unlike a traditional medical endowment that merely writes checks to an affiliated hospital, Innovative Hematology is structurally intertwined with the clinic's daily operations, funding comprehensive care delivery, pharmaceutical inventories, and clinical research programs from its own investment base. The foundation deploys capital through a diversified strategy spanning buyouts, growth equity, fund-of-funds commitments, and secondaries. Its investment portfolio is designed to generate returns that sustain the IHTC's dual mission: providing direct patient care and advancing clinical hematology research. The physical asset footprint includes the IHTC headquarters and clinic at 8326 Naab Road in Indianapolis, along with a pharmaceutical inventory managed on-site. The clinic maintains a long-standing clinical training and financial support partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, embedding the foundation's capital strategy within a broader academic-medical ecosystem. The board combines deep clinical and entrepreneurial experience. Chairman Phillip Himelstein is also a founder of The Sage Group, a Los Angeles-based merchant bank.
