Jefferson Health is none of those. It is a tax-exempt regional health system that delivers clinical care through hospitals, outpatient facilities, and a physician practice group. Revenue is generated predominantly from patient-care services billed to commercial insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid, supplemented by research grants, tuition from Thomas Jefferson University, philanthropy through the Office of Institutional Advancement, and a managed-care health plan subsidiary. No single wealth-generating event or family patrimony backs the enterprise.

The primary catchment spans Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey, where the bulk of hospitals, outpatient sites, and urgent-care centers are concentrated. The Indianapolis and Boston office registrations are believed to support educational programs, shared service centers, or research collaborations rather than patient-care delivery, though the system has not published a definitive explanation for those locations.
