Lakeland Regional Health System was formed in 1992 as a non-profit, community-owned healthcare organization serving southwest Michigan. Led by longtime CEO Loren Hamel, the system grew to encompass three acute-care hospitals, an outpatient surgery center, the Marie Yeager Cancer Center, and the Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center. The system's economic anchor was its relationship with Whirlpool Corporation, the region's dominant employer, which supplied several board members including former executives Dan Hopp and Michael Todman. The system's endowment and investment portfolio were funded through hospital operating surpluses and community philanthropy, anchored by the Corewell Health Foundation Southwest Michigan. Asset allocation priorities, while not publicly detailed, were managed from Grand Rapids following the system's integration. The portfolio supported capital projects, clinical program development, and charitable care across Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties. The system maintained clinical and educational partnerships with Andrews University and Lake Michigan College to build a local healthcare workforce pipeline. Lakeland Regional Health merged with Spectrum Health in 2018, becoming Spectrum Health Lakeland, and subsequently became part of Corewell Health in 2022 following Spectrum's merger with Beaumont Health. Loren Hamel served as Board Chair of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association during the 2017-2018 term, the peak of his external industry influence. Local philanthropist Merlin Hanson, owner of Weldun Industries, was a major benefactor whose name endures on the hospice center. What distinguished Lakeland's model was its role as a community asset with no single wealthy founder — the endowment and investment corpus were collectively owned by the region, governed by a community board rather than a family office or foundation patriarch. This mutualized governance model, common among Midwestern community hospitals, meant the investment function was subsumed within the health system's treasury rather than operating as an independent institutional allocator.
