Legend Star

Legend Star (www.lstar.vc) has partnered for many years with entrepreneurs to build amazing companies, and are most focused on technologies that fall into one of the following two categories: Technology Applied to Transforming Industry Too many industries have been stagnant for far too long—whether it’s energy, transportation, healthcare, construction, hospitality, or aviation. We love helping entrepreneurs with strong sector knowledge to light a fire under these industries (typically using technology or business model innovations) and watch them transform. Platform Technologies Creating New Possibilities While some entrepreneurs will be fighting battles with these monolithic industry giants, others will provide them with ammunition—in the form of platform technologies that can be applied in a variety of applications. The internet is changing to include devices, advanced algorithms, sensors, robots, and machines of all sorts. As an early stage venture fund with a strong China background, we have invested in 100 + companies across the US and China that have led to IPO’s, acquisitions, and some of China’s strongest technology companies. We believe that the scale and scope of China can be used be a turbocharger to businesses, whether that means finding beta-testes, accessing large databases, scaling up manufacturing or access to capital. The Legend network is a valuable resource in this enterprise. Legend Holdings: Legend Star is part of the Legend Holdings family (www.legend holdings.com.cn). Legend Holdings is one of the largest conglomerates in China. It is the parent company of Lenovo, Raycom (real-estate), Shenzhou (car rental), Lakala (payments), Joyvio (Agriculture), and many others.

Frequently asked questions

What is Legend Star's relationship to Legend Holdings and Lenovo?

Legend Star is a subsidiary of Legend Holdings, the Chinese investment conglomerate founded in 1984. Legend Holdings is the parent company of Lenovo Group and maintains significant stakes in financial services, agriculture, and technology companies. Legend Star operates as the group's dedicated early-stage technology investment platform, with a mandate distinct from Legend Capital, which handles larger growth-equity and buyout transactions.

Which investment stages does Legend Star target?

Legend Star focuses on seed, start-up, and early-stage growth rounds, typically leading or co-leading pre-Series A transactions. The firm emphasizes commercialization-stage investments where laboratory-proven technology requires capital and operational support to reach initial market deployment. Pre-IPO and later expansion rounds are generally handled by sibling vehicle Legend Capital rather than Legend Star.

How does Legend Star source its deal flow?

The firm draws deal flow primarily from China's national research infrastructure, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences — the institution where Legend Holdings was originally incubated — and other top-tier university research programs. This channel provides access to intellectual property emerging from government-funded laboratories and academic spinouts, a sourcing advantage distinct from the alumni-network and accelerator-based models common among independent venture firms.

Does Legend Star participate only in direct investments?

Public record indicates Legend Star invests directly into portfolio companies, typically taking equity stakes in operating entities rather than committing capital through fund-of-funds structures. The firm's model emphasizes hands-on operational engagement, drawing on parent company expertise in manufacturing and distribution to support portfolio company growth, rather than passive fund commitments.

How is Legend Star different from Legend Capital?

The two entities share a parent company but operate with separate investment committees, stage mandates, and risk profiles. Legend Star targets the very earliest commercialization stages — seed and start-up — often working with technology from state research programs. Legend Capital manages larger pools of capital for growth equity and buyout transactions, historically including prominent funds such as LC Fund VIII which closed at approximately $700 million in 2018.
