The LEO Foundation was created in 1984 to perpetuate LEO Pharma after its founders transferred ownership into the enterprise structure. Knud Abildgaard established the vehicle to keep the Copenhagen-based pharmaceutical company independent. The foundation today owns 80% of LEO Pharma through LEO Holding A/S, with Nordic Capital holding the remaining 20% since 2021. Investment activity centers on the operating company alongside a separate financial portfolio. The foundation allocates across listed shares, government and covered bonds, credit, private equity, infrastructure, and real estate. Geographic exposure spans Denmark and global markets. Confirmed holdings include direct ownership of LEO Pharma A/S and LEO Holding A/S. Ticket sizes for external commitments range from $30M to $60M. The foundation requires external managers to align with its ESG policy derived from the UN Global Compact principles. The organization employs 30 professionals at its Copenhagen headquarters. It maintains no additional offices. Philanthropic vehicles operate alongside the investment function, with $39-40M in annual grants. In 2024 the foundation awarded DKK 275 million across 75 grants for independent skin research. September 2024 marked the 40th anniversary reception held in Denmark. The foundation also participates in the European Network of Enterprise Foundations and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment. A core structural feature is the enterprise foundation model that locks long-term ownership of LEO Pharma while separating philanthropic distributions from commercial operations. Board oversight integrates LEO Pharma governance with investment and grant decisions through overlapping trustees including Peter Haahr and Lars Green.
