Executive Director Heather Vahdat and Director of Research Logan Nickels lead grant allocation. MCI uses a scientific advisory board to review proposals; final approvals are made by the board of directors (per MCI annual reports).

MCI is a 501(c)(3) grant-making foundation. It does not take equity positions in the entities it funds. Its model is philanthropic grantmaking to academic labs and biotech startups, not venture investing.

MCI targets discovery through early clinical development. Most grants support preclinical and Phase I safety studies. The organization explicitly avoids late-stage clinical trials (Phase III), which it views as the domain of pharmaceutical partners (per MCI strategy documents).

Deal flow comes through open competition, existing relationships with academic reproductive biology centers, and solicitations at conferences such as the Society for the Study of Reproduction annual meeting. MCI also receives referrals from NIH program officers.

MCI funds globally but has historically concentrated on North American and European research institutions. Recent grants have gone to labs in the UK, India, and China (per MCI grantee lists).

MCI does not disclose an endowment size. The organization funds its operations and grants through annual donations, foundation grants, and periodic fundraising campaigns. It has no public record of a permanent capital pool.
