Dr. Edward F. Mielke, a physician, established the Mielke Family Foundation in 1963 with his wife Beulah and his sisters, Ruth and Sarah Mielke—a librarian and a mathematics teacher, respectively. The foundation's initial wealth came from Dr. Mielke's medical practice and the family's pooled assets. It reorganized in 1996 to become a supporting organization within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, a structure that embeds its governance and investment management within a larger community foundation network rather than operating independently. The foundation's grantmaking concentrates on education, the arts, health, youth services, and aging programs, all within the geographic footprint of Appleton and Shawano, Wisconsin. Its deployment strategy is two-pronged: it makes traditional grants from its pooled investment portfolio at CFFVR, and it directly owns and operates community assets. These real assets include the Mielke Park & Arts Center in Shawano, the Community Early Learning Center (CELC) in downtown Appleton, and the whimsical A-Maze-ing Heart Slide, a public playground installation. The foundation's relationship with Lawrence University is a signature commitment, funding the Mielke Family Department of Education and the Mielke Summer Institute, which trains K-12 teachers. Second-generation leadership fell to the late Dr. John Mielke, a cardiologist who co-founded the Appleton Education Foundation and deepened the family's focus on early childhood and educator training. Sally Mielke, a former Outagamie County Board Chair, serves as an emeritus board member, providing continuity. Pam Gruner currently serves as Board President. The family also established the John & Sally Mielke Early Years Fund, a component fund that channels additional resources toward early childhood development. The foundation's organizational home at 4455 W Lawrence Street in Appleton places it at the operational center of the Fox Valley's philanthropic infrastructure. The foundation's structural differentiator is its hybrid model—it is both a grantmaker and a direct operator of community facilities. Unlike most private foundations that solely distribute funds to third-party nonprofits, the Mielke Family Foundation owns and maintains the physical infrastructure where its mission is executed. The CELC building is a functioning early learning center; the Shawano property is a public arts venue. This dual posture means its capital base includes depreciable real property requiring ongoing stewardship, a responsibility that extends the family's operational involvement beyond check writing into facility governance.
