Miracles in Sight operates as a nonprofit eye bank dedicated to restoring vision through the recovery and distribution of ocular tissue for corneal transplants. The organization traces its roots to the former North Carolina Eye Bank and expanded significantly in 2020 when Ingrid Schunder led the acquisition of the Lone Star Lions Eye Bank, creating the Miracles in Sight Lone Star Division based in Texas. Its primary mission is facilitating cornea transplants for individuals suffering from conditions like Fuchs' dystrophy and other sight-threatening disorders. Operationally, Miracles in Sight recovers donated eye tissue, evaluates it in its 26,000-square-foot lab in Clemmons, and supplies ophthalmologists with processed grafts for surgery. The nonprofit also partners with researchers to advance treatments for blinding eye diseases. Beyond tissue distribution, the organization markets Vital Tears, a line of autologous serum eye drops custom-manufactured for patients. Geographic reach extends from the Carolinas into Central Texas and Lubbock, with distribution networks servicing requests domestically and around the globe. The leadership team includes professionals with combined decades of eye banking and tissue recovery experience. President and CEO Ingrid Schunder was promoted to the role in June 2022 after leading the Lone Star acquisition. Vice Presidents Kristen McCoy and Mike Tramber oversee business development and operations, respectively. In 2025, Miracles in Sight appointed Kimberly Monroe as Director of Donor Development to strengthen relationships with hospital and donor partners. Its infrastructure includes a dedicated fund development department, launched under Director Ksenia Richards to connect individual and corporate donors to the organization's mission. Miracles in Sight's structural differentiator is its hybrid identity as both a surgically-integrated tissue supplier and an active nonprofit research partner. While most eye banks focus narrowly on recovery and distribution, Miracles in Sight couples its high-volume clinical services with a capital campaign aimed at building a next-generation lab and training facility. The organization also participates in the Global Alliance of Eye Bank Associations through sector representatives on the executive board, placing it at the center of international ophthalmic policy and technician education.
