Mission Bay Capital
Mission Bay Capital LLC uses capital and expertise to help entrepreneurs emerging from the University of California change the world. We begin with the conviction that more of the creativity of the University of California can directly benefit society. Universities have an obligation to meet public needs for new sources of energy, new solutions for patients, and ultimately the formation of whole new industries. MBC will help launch companies that meet these needs. Our success will redress social challenges, replenish future funds, and ultimately build a research and educational endowment for QB3 (California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences) to drive the development of the next generation of innovations.

Frequently asked questions
How does Mission Bay Capital source its deals?
The firm's deal pipeline runs through MBC BioLabs, an incubator network that Managing Partner Doug Crawford founded and operates. The four San Francisco and San Carlos lab sites house 117 active companies, giving the investment team daily operational visibility before writing a check. This co-location model means many portfolio companies are sourced from within the firm's own facilities.
What is the relationship between Mission Bay Capital and MBC BioLabs?
MBC BioLabs is a co-working laboratory network that provides turnkey wet-lab space to early-stage life-science startups. Mission Bay Capital is the affiliated venture capital firm that invests in companies emerging from or operating within those labs. Doug Crawford serves as Managing Partner of Mission BioCapital, Managing Director of Mission Bay Capital, and General Manager of MBC BioLabs, linking the incubation and capital-deployment functions under unified leadership.
What investment stage does Mission Bay Capital target?
The firm focuses on early-stage life-science companies, with emphasis on seed and startup rounds where the primary need is capital to validate technology. By writing the earliest institutional checks, Mission Bay Capital positions itself before larger syndicates engage. The portfolio includes companies that later attracted follow-on funding from Canaan Partners, Venrock, US Venture Partners and Menlo Ventures, whose partners sit on the firm's Investment Advisory Committee.
Does Mission Bay Capital maintain a presence beyond San Francisco?
The firm's incubator network spans four sites in San Francisco and San Carlos. Venture Partner Peter Parker connects the firm to the Boston-Cambridge ecosystem through his roles as co-founder of Cambridge BioLabs and LabCentral on the East Coast, though Mission Bay Capital does not list a formal office in that region.
What exits has Mission Bay Capital achieved?
Managing Partner Doug Crawford has overseen investments in 45 companies, with disclosed exits that include Alector, Atreca, Cell Design Labs, iPierian, Mitokinin, Principia, and Redwood Biosciences. The firm's incubator network has collectively produced 153 clinical programs and $14 billion in follow-on fundraising across its resident startups.
