Strategic oversight falls under CEO Paddy Larkin and the Board of Directors, chaired by David Gray. Because the firm is a mutual with no shareholders, appointed consumer representatives fulfill the governance role that shareholders would play in a conventional utility, scrutinising performance and ensuring all investment decisions align with the long-term interest of Northern Ireland energy consumers.

Neither. Mutual Energy is a consumer-owned mutual and a government/public body, not a family office or an asset manager. It directly owns and operates critical gas and electricity transmission assets on behalf of Northern Ireland energy consumers, reinvesting all surplus rather than returning capital to shareholders or family beneficiaries.

Mutual Energy owns the Scotland to Northern Ireland natural gas pipeline (SNIP), which imports almost all of Northern Ireland's gas, and the Moyle Interconnector, the only link between the electricity systems of Northern Ireland and Scotland. It also operates the Belfast Gas Transmission pipeline and shares responsibility for the Northern Ireland Gas Market Operator (GMO NI).

The firm has created a dedicated Energy Transition team to address decarbonisation challenges. In June 2025, CEO Paddy Larkin detailed in Energy Ireland how Mutual Energy is working to balance security of supply with decarbonisation, and the firm has announced a collaboration with other gas and electricity operators to jointly plan future energy scenarios.

Mutual Energy serves as the Northern Ireland Network Emergency Coordinator (NINEC). In that capacity, it is legally responsible for establishing arrangements to coordinate all licensed gas companies during supply emergencies, taking timely decisions to minimise risk and disruption across the entire Northern Ireland gas network.
