The board includes representatives of Mumtalakat, Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund, which holds a strategic equity stake in NBB. Specific allocations to private equity, real estate, and infrastructure are typically approved through the bank's internal investment committee structure.

NBB runs its proprietary investment activities within the same corporate balance sheet as its core banking franchise, not through a separately branded asset management subsidiary. This structure means investment allocations are funded by the bank's deposit base and equity capital rather than third-party limited partner commitments. The merger with Bahrain Islamic Bank in 2023 further consolidated the balance sheet, bringing Islamic and conventional investment books under unified management.

NBB invests both directly and through fund commitments. Direct investments typically target Bahraini and GCC-based private companies, commercial real estate, and infrastructure projects where the bank can leverage its local corporate relationships. Fund commitments provide exposure to broader regional private equity, private credit, and hedge fund strategies managed by external general partners, often alongside other Gulf financial institutions.

Mumtalakat, the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Bahrain, holds a minority equity stake in NBB and maintains representation on the bank's board of directors. This relationship aligns NBB's strategic investment priorities with national economic development goals while preserving the bank's commercial independence in individual allocation decisions. The Mumtalakat connection also provides access to co-investment opportunities that flow through Bahrain's sovereign-linked deal network.

NBB concentrates its proprietary investment portfolio primarily in Bahrain and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council region, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman. The bank's real estate book is heavily weighted toward Manama commercial assets, particularly in the Seef District. Select fund commitments may provide limited exposure to North American and European strategies, but regional GCC allocations dominate the investment book.
