National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

NIMHD's mission is to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. It funds and conducts studies on why racial and ethnic minorities experience worse health outcomes, and how to close those gaps. The institute was established by Congress in 2000 as part of the NIH.

Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable, MD, has served as NIMHD director since 2015. The institute's National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, composed of scientists and community representatives, reviews grant applications and advises on research priorities (per NIH).

NIMHD funds extramural grants at universities, medical centers, and research institutions, plus intramural research at NIH. Its portfolio covers biomedical, behavioral, social science, and public health research, with emphasis on social determinants, environmental factors, and healthcare access. Grants range from exploratory pilot studies to multi-center trials.

Unlike most NIH institutes focused on a specific disease or organ system, NIMHD targets disparities across all diseases affecting minority populations. It fills research gaps that no other institute covers, addressing overlapping health conditions and social factors. This cross-cutting mandate gives it unique authority to fund integrative studies.

NIMHD's primary funding vehicle is grants to academic and research institutions, but it supports community-based participatory research through specific programs. The institute requires community engagement components in many of its grants, ensuring research is shaped by and disseminated to affected populations. Direct community organization funding is limited compared to institutional awards.

NIMHD research covers Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and other racial and ethnic minority groups. The institute also studies disparities related to socioeconomic status, geography, and sexual orientation when these intersect with minority health (per NIH).

NIMHD is one of 27 institutes and centers within the National Institutes of Health, a part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. It coordinates with other NIH components on health-disparities research, chairs the NIH-wide Health Disparities Working Group, and reports to the NIH director. Its statutory authority was established by the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000.
