National Tertiary Retirement Fund

The National Tertiary Retirement Fund was established in 1994 to deliver retirement benefits to staff at South African universities. Anesh Soonder serves as independent chairperson; Jennifer Grefen acts as principal officer. The fund holds exposure to South African listed equities via the FTSE/JSE All Share Index and global equities via the MSCI World Index. It maintains allocations to listed and unlisted property in South Africa, government and corporate bonds on the JSE, and a Shari'ah-compliant portfolio with commodity exposure. Private equity and infrastructure commitments are executed through external managers, with a 2.8 percent allocation to private equity recorded in fund data. The fund works with Momentum Retirement Administrators for administration, Sygnia Asset Management for discretionary investment management, and Willis Towers Watson as actuary and investment consultant. It participates in industry groups including Batseta and the Pension Lawyers Association. The fund operates under a board of trustees structure with participating employers that include Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, and Nelson Mandela University.
