The NFL Foundation launched in 1973 as the philanthropic arm of the National Football League, governed by a board drawn from the league's ownership ranks. Chairman Charlotte Jones Anderson, executive vice president of the Dallas Cowboys, leads a board that includes Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill, Pittsburgh Steelers president Arthur J. Rooney II, and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan. Executive director Alexia Gallagher handles day-to-day grant operations from the New York headquarters. The foundation deploys capital through a distributed matching-grant architecture rather than a centralized endowment. Its program roster spans youth football access, health and safety, social justice, and community support. Notable vehicles include player matching grants (up to $5,000 per grant on behalf of current or former players), youth football camp grants funding over 400 free camps annually, and club matching grants that let each of the 32 NFL teams draw funds for local youth and high school football needs. The NFL Grassroots Field Grant Program, run with Local Initiatives Support Corporation, has funded field construction and refurbishment across 16 US cities. International activity runs through a separate entity, NFL Foundation UK. Recent deployment provides a scale reference: in February 2026, the foundation, the Bay Area Host Committee, and the 49ers Foundation contributed $8.2 million through the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program to Bay Area communities. In January 2025, the foundation joined the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Houston Texans in committing $5 million to Southern California wildfire relief. These multi-party structures illustrate the foundation's operating model — it rarely acts alone, instead aggregating commitments from clubs, corporate partners like Nike, and host committees to multiply the reach of every dollar. Structurally, the NFL Foundation differs from most large American philanthropic foundations in that its endowment is not a single corpus managed by an investment office but a pass-through vehicle funded annually by the league and its 32 member clubs. The board composition — active NFL owners rather than independent trustees — ties grant decisions directly to the commercial interests and community footprints of the franchises. That governance model makes the foundation a tool for collective owner philanthropy rather than an autonomous grantmaker.
