Northern Gritstone

All normal course investment, divestment, and follow-on decisions are made by the Investment Committee of Northern Gritstone Investment Manager Limited. The Executive Committee, which handles day-to-day strategy execution, is separate from the Investment Committee. Northern Gritstone does not publicly disclose the named members of its Investment Committee.

The firm has exclusive origination partnerships with the universities of Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield — collectively known as the Northern Arc. These four institutions produce the highest annual volume of spinouts with Higher Education ownership in the UK. Northern Gritstone also invests in early-stage companies elsewhere in the North of England outside the university ecosystem.

Northern Gritstone invests directly in companies. The firm puts capital into early-stage, IP-rich businesses and has the capacity to follow on into later growth rounds. There is no public indication that it operates a fund-of-funds program.

The firm backs companies from the earliest stages — seed and startup — through to later growth. Northern Gritstone structures itself as a long-term partner and states that it has the patience, capital, and resources to support companies across multiple funding cycles.

Northern Gritstone is an independent business owned by its management team, a series of blue-chip institutions, several large local authority pension funds from the North of England, and high-net-worth individuals. Each of the four founding university partners holds a small shareholding.

The firm does not operate a separate philanthropic foundation. It embeds its 'profit with purpose' mandate through internal governance, including a Purpose and Impact Committee that designs and oversees the firm’s strategy on environmental and social impact.

The firm does not publish a list of excluded sectors. Its public focus is exclusively on science and technology startups with strong intellectual property, particularly in deep technology and life sciences. It does not reference consumer internet, financial services, or traditional industrial businesses as areas of activity.
