The Principia Corporation was established in 1898 by Mary Kimball Morgan to operate schools grounded in Christian Science principles. Its endowment generates returns for scholarships and faculty chairs at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, and the associated K-12 campus in St. Louis. Hans Fredrikson became Chief Investment Officer in 2023. The endowment allocates 20 percent to private equity and maintains exposure to private credit, infrastructure, and real estate. Confirmed holdings include limited partnership interests in Charterhouse Capital Partners Fund and Silver Point Specialty Credit Fund II. Geographic reach covers Europe and Asia in addition to North American direct holdings. Ticket sizes range from $5 million to $35 million. The firm employs external providers including Cliffwater LLC for alternatives advice and State Street Bank & Trust Company as custodian. It participates in the NACUBO-TIAA Study of Endowments and maintains memberships in the National Association of Independent Schools. January 2024: Sponsored the Public Affairs Conference on its Elsah campus. Governance separates the endowment from operating entities through The Principia Administrative Corporation and supporting foundations such as Stichting Fred M. Van Eck. Investment decisions rest with the internal team under board oversight rather than external discretionary mandates.
