Randox Laboratories was founded in 1982 by Dr. Peter FitzGerald, who initially operated from a small laboratory in Crumlin, Northern Ireland. FitzGerald's early work focused on developing ELISA-based diagnostic assays for veterinary and human medicine. Over four decades, he grew the company into a vertically integrated manufacturer of clinical chemistry reagents, immunoassays, and molecular diagnostics, with manufacturing facilities in the UK and operations spanning 145 countries. The company's product range covers over 200 different analytes, including tests for cardiac markers, thyroid function, fertility, and infectious diseases. Randox also develops proprietary diagnostic platform systems, such as the RX series of clinical chemistry analyzers and the Vidas immunoassay platform. Its contract manufacturing division produces tests for other diagnostics firms globally. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Randox secured UK government contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds to supply testing kits and laboratory services, including operation of the UK's national Lighthouse lab network (per public procurement records, 2020–2022). Randox employs approximately 1,500 people across its primary sites in Crumlin and Dunmurry, Northern Ireland, with additional sales and distribution offices in the US, Germany, India, and China. In 2021, the company opened a new research and development center within its headquarters campus. Randox also operates a philanthropic arm, the Randox Foundation, though its funding and separation from the core business are not publicly detailed. In recent years, the company has faced scrutiny over government contract awards during the pandemic (per UK National Audit Office reports, 2022). The firm remains private and founder-led, with Peter FitzGerald as sole owner, a governance structure uncommon among companies of its scale. Randox does not publish financial statements as a private entity, and its ownership concentration means no external investors or board pressures shape its strategy.
