Recipharm was founded in 1995 when Thomas Eldered and Lars Backsell acquired a production plant from Pharmacia in Stockholm. The pair leaned into the industry's growing preference for outsourcing, gradually expanding their manufacturing footprint across Europe. What began as a single Swedish unit has become a multinational CDMO with facilities in countries including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK. The company operates across the full pharmaceutical supply chain, spanning development, clinical trial material production, and commercial-scale manufacturing. Its services cover solid-dose forms, sterile injectables, lyophilisation, and controlled substances — delivery formats that require significant regulatory expertise. Recipharm has served major pharmaceutical firms and biotechs, though specifics of client contracts remain proprietary. Recipharm has grown aggressively through acquisition. It moved into the Indian market via a joint venture and later expanded its biologics capabilities with investments in advanced therapy medicinal products. In February 2021, the company was taken private by EQT in a deal valued at approximately SEK 23 billion, reflecting the consolidator thesis that underpins the CDMO space (per a company press release, February 2021). The firm's ownership now sits with EQT Private Equity, shifting it from a publicly listed entity to a private portfolio company. The structural differentiator for Recipharm is its position as a pure-play CDMO that EQT can use as an acquisition platform — a roll-up vehicle for further consolidation in a fragmented European market. While many family-founded manufacturers sell and exit, the Eldered-Backsell model evolved into a sponsor-backed industry consolidator, retaining operational DNA while plugging into institutional capital for the next expansion phase.
