Managing Director Don Scifres and Vice President Mike Foster have led the investment function since the firm’s 2003 founding. Scifres is the former CEO and Chairman of SDL, Inc., and Foster was its CFO. Foster stepped back from his partner role in 2024 but continues to consult for the firm, leaving Scifres as the primary decision-maker.

The firm relies on Don Scifres’ technical network built over four decades in optoelectronics and semiconductor lasers. His standing as a National Academy of Engineering member and 140-patent holder gives the firm direct access to founder-led science companies, particularly in biotechnology and optical technologies, that often fall outside conventional venture pipelines.

SDL Ventures is structured as a private equity firm — not a family office. It invests through SDL Capital, LP. While founded with Scifres’ personal capital after the SDL, Inc. merger, the firm’s activity scale — over 100 financings across ~30 companies — and its function as lead investor for nearly half its deals place it squarely in the early-stage venture category.

Every known deployment has been through direct equity investments in operating companies. The firm states its strategy as early-stage direct investing with initial checks of $500,000 to $2 million. No fund-of-funds commitments or LP allocations to outside managers are disclosed.

The firm targets early-stage start-up and expansion-stage companies, often serving as the lead investor. Its model includes reserving approximately three times the initial investment for follow-on rounds, indicating commitment through the growth phase rather than a seed-and-exit approach.

The capital traces to the July 2000 announcement of the merger of SDL, Inc. into JDS Uniphase, which valued SDL at $41 billion and was the largest technology merger ever recorded at that time. Don Scifres subsequently left JDS Uniphase in February 2003 and seeded SDL Ventures with the proceeds.

No philanthropic foundation, donor-advised fund, or charitable entity linked to SDL Ventures or its principals is publicly disclosed. The firm’s structure appears purely commercial, with no identified separation between investment activities and organized giving.
