All evaluation and selection is performed by Commerce Ventures, an early-stage venture firm focused on commerce technology. Shoptalk itself is a limited partner in Commerce Ventures but has no access to the applications and does not participate in investment decisions, per the program's website.

The program co-invests only alongside an existing lead investor. Its own materials state it will participate when another venture firm leads the round, and it does not seek board seats.

Shoptalk Ventures commits $1 million per company and aims to deploy into roughly 20 early-stage companies over a two-year period. The total program pool is not publicly disclosed.

Described focuses are ecommerce and retail technology. The application form lists criteria including team experience, early product-market fit, large market opportunity, and a differentiated, defensible model. Commerce Ventures performs diligence using its own industry network.

Commerce Ventures states it can help companies identify additional capital sources, including further direct investment from Commerce Ventures itself or introductions to its network of individual investors and venture firms, beyond what Shoptalk Ventures contributes.

Retailers may join the Commerce Ventures network, which provides access to information about the portfolio. The program does not require retailers to commit capital, and Shoptalk does not share application data with them.

Commerce Ventures follows typical venture capital due diligence, accelerated by its industry network. The firm states it generally responds to applicants within two weeks of submission.
