Gordon Dee Smith founded Strategic Insight Group in 1996. Before launching SIG, he headed a venture capital firm investing in Latin America and worked as an intelligence contractor for the US Defense Intelligence Agency. Smith also co-founded an international NGO with Roderick Grierson, who later joined as Executive Editor and Chief Research Officer. SIG serves three client groups: investors (pre-investment due diligence, market analysis, post-transaction monitoring), public and private companies (competitor intelligence, partner vetting), and law firms (asset discovery, litigation support). The firm employs a zero-based analysis protocol that combines open-source intelligence (OSINT) and in-country human intelligence (HUMINT). The firm has conducted thousands of projects in over 100 countries and claims to have supported transactions exceeding US$120 billion. SIG operates from offices in Stamford, Connecticut, and Fort Worth, Texas. The leadership team includes eight named executives: Smith as CEO, Andrew Mabry as COO, Bronson Stocker as Managing Director, Grierson as CRO, and others covering growth, knowledge, sustainability, and projects. The firm does not disclose revenue, client count, or AUM. It is structured as a private intelligence firm, not an asset manager, and does not manage third-party capital. The firm’s distinctive methodology — zero-based analysis — deliberately discards prior assumptions and tests hypotheses through iterative data collection. This positions SIG closer to a government intelligence unit than a traditional consulting or due diligence shop. Smith’s background at the DIA and his advisory roles at the Council on Foreign Relations and the Bretton Woods Committee reinforce this posture.
