The Network Alliance is the cross-industry collaboration body that unites pharmacies, PBMs, health plans, EHR vendors, prescribers, and public-health agencies that exchange data through Surescripts. Alliance participants work together to define data quality standards, launch new interoperability use cases — such as electronic case reporting and specialty medication workflows — and govern network integrity. The structure treats competitors as joint stewards of the shared infrastructure.

Surescripts automates prior authorization by pulling clinical documentation from the EHR at the moment of prescribing, matching it against payer-specific coverage rules, and returning an adjudicated response — often in real time — to the prescriber's workflow. The firm expanded this automation in 2026, reaching roughly 50% more prescribers nationwide by onboarding additional EHR and health-plan connections.

Surescripts generates revenue through network access and transaction fees, not through the sale of patient data. Its data-management framework operates under HIPAA compliance obligations and a stated stewardship model that prioritizes accuracy, trust, and network integrity. The Master Patient Index is used to link records for treatment coordination, not for commercial data brokerage.
