Jonathan Parmer, the founder, and his daughter Kathleen Parmer are both Managing Partners and jointly oversee investment decisions. Jon Parmer built the fund-of-funds portfolio from the firm’s inception in 2000; Kate Parmer, who moved into the role full-time after a career spanning S&P Global Ratings, State Street Global Advisors, and LPL Financial, now co-manages manager selection and portfolio construction.

Swan Ventures operates exclusively as a fund-of-funds, committing to venture capital managers rather than making direct company investments. The firm’s stated purpose since inception has been to provide limited partners with diversified exposure to venture capital via carefully selected external fund managers.

The founding capital originated with Dr. Jonathan Parmer’s private Ob/Gyn practice in Palo Alto and his role as founder and initial CEO of Viveve Corporation, a women’s health medical-device company. Parmer assigned multiple US and international patents to Viveve and later sold the intellectual property to an international healthcare company.

Viveve Corporation (originally TivaMed) was founded in 2005 by Jonathan Parmer, who served as its initial CEO and assigned several patents to the company. Parmer left Viveve in 2009. The company no longer exists, but its intellectual property and Parmer’s patents were purchased by an international healthcare company, for which Parmer now consults.

Swan Ventures III is the firm’s third fund-of-funds vehicle, currently in formation. It will be based in San Diego, California, where Managing Partner Jonathan Parmer relocated after leaving Silicon Valley. The move represents a geographic shift from the firm’s historical operations tied to Bigfork, Montana and its original Silicon Valley physician network.

Swan Ventures integrates philanthropy into its investment approach, continuing a focus on healthcare-related giving that originated with Fund I’s physician LP base. The firm states it remains dedicated to healthcare philanthropy, a commitment rooted in the founder’s medical career and his work in women’s health and medical devices.

Swan Ventures is a compact, family-run fund-of-funds manager that has raised two prior vehicles and is launching a third. The firm does not publicly disclose assets under management or fund sizes, and the investment team consists solely of the two Managing Partners, making it a small, concentrated decision-making unit by institutional standards.
