The Trust Family Foundation was established in 1986 by Dena and Martin Trust, the couple behind the immense apparel fortune generated through Mast Industries. Martin Trust effectively functioned as the global supply-chain architect for Leslie Wexner's L Brands, building the importing and manufacturing muscle that powered The Limited and Victoria's Secret into retail dominance. The couple formalized their giving through the Brookline, Massachusetts-based foundation, concentrating grants close to home in New England. The foundation's grantmaking followed a defined set of interests: Jewish causes, education, medical technology, and the arts. Rather than chasing national visibility, the Trusts used the vehicle to support local institutions with consistent, often multi-year commitments. Arts funding flowed to institutions where Dena Trust served in governance roles, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the New England Aquarium. The foundation maintained a low public profile consistent with a private family funder, never launching a standalone website or publicly reporting detailed financials. Governance of the foundation sat with the couple during their lifetimes. Following Martin Trust's death in 2019 and Dena Trust's passing in 2020, the foundation entered a terminal phase. The couple's children — David Andrew Trust, a director of the related entity Trust Family Industries, and Laura Beth Trust — have maintained residual board roles, but grantmaking activity effectively ceased after 2020. The foundation's structural differentiator lies in its arch-shaped life cycle. It launched as one of the earliest formalizations of the Mast-L Brands wealth, operated as a quiet, lean grantmaker with overlapping family and operating-business governance, and then ended with the founders. Unlike foundations that professionalize and outlive their donors through hired CIOs and trustees, the Trust Family Foundation appears structured as a finite vehicle whose lifespan matched the philanthropic engagement of Martin and Dena Trust themselves.
