Urban-X

Johan Schwind serves as Managing Director and leads the investment committee. Schwind has run Urban-X since its 2016 launch, overseeing both the accelerator program and the firm's investment decisions. The investment committee includes senior representatives from MINI and BMW Group, though day-to-day sourcing and diligence is driven by Schwind's Brooklyn-based deal team.

Urban-X sources through a combination of open-call applications for its twice-yearly accelerator cohorts, referrals from the BMW Group engineering network, and inbound from portfolio company founders and venture capital co-investors. The 20-week accelerator program itself functions as a deal-sourcing engine, with Urban-X evaluating roughly 1,000 applicants per cohort. The corporate parent relationship provides access to mobility and manufacturing deal flow that purely financial VCs do not typically see.

Urban-X operates as a hybrid. It was co-founded by MINI (a BMW Group brand) and the venture platform Urban Us, and it makes investments from a balance sheet that blends corporate and venture capital LPs. Crucially, it structures its investments with standard venture terms rather than the strategic provisions common in corporate venture capital. Founders are not required to license, partner with, or sell to MINI or BMW as a condition of investment.

Urban-X invests directly into startups, typically leading or co-leading pre-seed and seed rounds with check sizes that vary by cohort. The firm also reserves capital for select follow-on investments through Series A. Urban-X does not operate a fund-of-funds strategy and does not make LP commitments to other venture funds. Its deployment is entirely direct.

Urban-X targets the earliest institutional stages: pre-seed and seed, occasionally extending into Series A for follow-on rounds. Companies selected for Urban-X cohorts typically have a prototype or early product in market and are seeking capital to bridge to a larger institutional round. The firm's 20-week program is designed to prepare founders for that next stage of fundraising.

MINI, a wholly owned brand of BMW Group, co-founded Urban-X alongside Urban Us, an early-stage venture manager focused on climate and urban technology. MINI provides strategic backing, brand sponsorship, and engineering resources. Urban Us contributed the venture operating model and early thesis development. Urban-X operates independently with its own investment committee, though both founding entities remain closely involved in program design and portfolio support.

Urban-X invests primarily in North America and Europe, with Brooklyn as its headquarters and primary program location. BMW Group facilities in Munich provide a European node. The firm also evaluates startups in emerging markets where rapid urbanization and infrastructure needs create a strong product-market fit for its portfolio companies. The platform is explicitly global in its sourcing, though its accelerator program is anchored in New York.
