Vassar College was founded in 1861 by Matthew Vassar. The institution became coeducational in 1969 and maintains its main campus in Poughkeepsie, New York. The endowment deploys capital across real estate, art holdings, and select private investments. Confirmed holdings include the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center collection of over 22,000 works, the Warburg Collection of Old Master Prints, and the Hudson River School paintings. Real estate assets comprise the main campus, 60 Raymond Avenue, and an Arlington portfolio of nearly 90 properties held through Arlington Capital Investors LLC. Geographic exposure centers on the United States with one noted position in Endless, a United Kingdom private equity vehicle. The college employs 358 staff. It maintains the Vassar College Endowment established in 1868 that distributes approximately $80 million in annual financial aid. March 2024 attendance at the Responsible Investment Forum in New York addressed ESG topics. Service providers include Pathstone as investment advisor and Grant Thornton LLP as auditor. Ownership of real estate occurs through College Properties LLC and joint ventures with Arlington Capital Investors LLC. These structures separate operating assets from the core academic mission.
