Velux Fonden was established in 1981 by Villum Kann Rasmussen, the founder of the VELUX Group, which revolutionized daylighting with its roof windows. The foundation is structurally intertwined with the company, owning a majority of its shares and using the dividends to fund its charitable work. Villum Kann Rasmussen's mission was to ensure the company's long-term independence while channeling profits into scientific and social causes. Today, the foundation remains under the leadership of the founder's family, with chairman Jens Kann-Rasmussen and vice chairman Lars Kann-Rasmussen guiding its dual role as corporate steward and grant-maker. Grant-making is concentrated in five priority areas: vision and eye health, active aging, environmental sustainability, science education, and cultural heritage. The foundation does not seek financial returns from its grants, instead disbursing non-repayable funds to research institutions and non-profits. Confirmed grantees include the University of Copenhagen for aging research and the University of Southern Denmark for vision science (per the foundation's published grant lists). Geographic focus is predominantly Denmark, though collaborations extend to other Nordic countries and occasionally international research consortia when the topic aligns with its core pillars. The foundation is one component of a larger family-influenced ecosystem. The Villum Foundation, established separately, focuses on technical and natural sciences, while Velux Fonden handles interdisciplinary societal challenges. Together, they represent one of Denmark's largest private research funders. Board oversight remains with descendants of the founder, ensuring the capital allocation continues to reflect the original intent of blending industrial stewardship with social investment. In September 2023, Velux Fonden awarded a significant multi-year grant to Danish natural history museums for public science engagement, reinforcing its commitment to cultural and educational programming (per the foundation, September 2023). The foundation's structural differentiator lies in its unusual corporate underpinning. Unlike many family foundations that manage a diversified portfolio of financial assets, Velux Fonden derives the majority of its spending power from its direct, controlling stake in a single operating company. This ties the foundation's financial capacity directly to the competitive performance of a manufacturing business in the building materials sector, creating an intimate — and potentially cyclical — link between grant-making capacity and the global construction market.
