As of February 2025, private equity firm Warburg Pincus acquired a majority stake in West Star Aviation. The Sterling Group, which acquired the company in 2018, retains a minority position alongside the management team. The deal was announced via a joint statement by both firms.

West Star holds technical certifications for most major business-aircraft lineages. Its hangar rotations regularly include Gulfstream, Bombardier, Cessna Citation, Dassault Falcon, Embraer, and Beechcraft Hawker airframes. The company also performs dedicated interior refurbishment and paint work at its Grand Junction, Colorado facility.

By operating an OEM-agnostic network, West Star competes on schedule flexibility and labor rates. Independent MROs typically offer shorter lead times for heavy inspections and avoid the captive-parts pricing premium. For flight departments with mixed fleets, a single vendor relationship with West Star replaces multiple OEM service-center logistics.

The company maintains major operational bases in East Alton, Illinois; Grand Junction, Colorado; and Chattanooga, Tennessee. An additional larger facility was added in Florida with the acquisition of Jet East, expanding its coverage into the Southeastern US and broadening its Gulfstream and large-cabin capability.

West Star has grown through strategic acquisitions under institutional sponsorship. The Sterling Group acquired the company in 2018 and subsequently added Jet East in 2021 to capture more Gulfstream volume. The February 2025 transaction with Warburg Pincus provides new capital for further facility expansion and potential add-on acquisitions.

West Star handles both airframe heavy maintenance and light engine services, but major engine overhauls are typically performed by the manufacturer's authorized network. The Ohio and Colorado shops are known for avionics retrofits, including Garmin, Collins Aerospace, and Honeywell Primus upgrades, which is an increasingly significant revenue line as aging jets are modernized.

West Star Aviation is a private equity-backed operating company, not a family office. It has been held by institutional sponsors since its initial buyout, most recently by Warburg Pincus. The question likely arises because family offices with aviation assets often maintain direct relationships with independent MROs like West Star.
