WGU Labs

WGU Labs is a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Governors University, the accredited nonprofit online university. It was launched in 2019 to translate the university's learner data and operational scale into venture investments, applied research, and startup creation — all focused on improving educational outcomes and workforce pathways for non-traditional students.

It does not operate as a traditional blind-pool venture fund. WGU Labs functions as an innovation unit funded from the university's balance sheet, combining an internal R&D lab, a venture studio that founds new companies, and an accelerator that makes early-stage equity investments in external education-technology startups. It does not publicly report a committed fund size or limited partner structure.

WGU Labs targets early-stage companies building tools for student success, workforce skilling, and education access, with a focus on products that serve non-traditional and underserved learners. Its portfolio has included LearningMate, a workforce development platform, and CueThink, a K-12 math problem-solving tool later acquired by Imagine Learning. Investments span both direct equity through its venture studio and cohort-based accelerator capital.
