Berling Capital traces its roots to 1976 when Esa Karppinen began with consulting and small investments. The firm converted to private equity general partner activity in 1986 and operated in that mode until 2014. During those decades it executed around forty mergers and acquisitions, at peak employing about 700 people across majority-owned companies. Since the 2014 transition the office has deployed as a limited partner into private equity funds while adding listed shares and derivatives. Geographic focus remains Europe. Historical co-investors include Umo Capital Oy and Veikko Laine Oy in the 2006 purchase of a stake in Amanda Capital Oyj, and CapMan in the ownership of Kämp Collection Hotels until the 2019 exit to Nordic Choice Hotels. The office maintains membership in the Finnish Venture Capital Association as a family office participant. No additional offices or headcount figures appear in public records. Esa Karppinen has held board seats at Aspo Oyj and Amanda Capital Oyj. Ownership rests with Esa Karppinen, his wife Anne, and their children Kim, Ira, and Nanna, who also occupy board roles.
