Flagship Pioneering

Flagship generates intellectual property and launches startups entirely in-house. Its internal scientific team pursues speculative 'what-if' hypotheses, funds the early research, files patents, and then incorporates a company around the resulting technology. It recruits external CEOs only after the startup has a defined platform and initial capital.

Noubar Afeyan founded the firm and remains its CEO and primary decision-maker. A group of managing partners and performance partners oversees capital allocation across the firm's funds and individual platform companies.

Flagship focuses overwhelmingly on companies it conceives and builds internally. It does not operate as a traditional venture capital firm that invests in third-party startups seeking capital. Its capital is deployed into its own incubated companies from seed through late stage.

Moderna was conceived, capitalized, and incorporated inside Flagship Pioneering. Flagship's internal exploratory unit developed the mRNA platform concept, filed the foundational patent estate, and launched Moderna as a Flagship portfolio company before recruiting external leadership.

Flagship builds bioplatforms — broad biological engineering systems that can generate multiple products across therapeutics, agriculture, and industrial biotechnology. Its companies have applied these platforms to areas including mRNA, gene editing, microbiome science, protein engineering, and cell therapy.
