Francis Capital Management

John Francis is the founder and sole portfolio manager. His research career began in the 1990s covering industrials and energy at Prudential Equity Group, followed by a senior analyst role at Mesirow Financial. He launched the firm in 2008 and is supported by a compact internal research team.

The firm targets publicly traded companies undergoing operational turnarounds, management changes, or cyclical recoveries, with a focus on asset-heavy industrials, energy-transition businesses, and specialty transportation. The central thesis is that Mr. Market misprices tangible assets and normalized earnings power during periods of transition.

The firm's strategy is executed entirely in the public markets. There are no dedicated private-equity, venture, or credit vehicles alongside the core public-equity strategies. The long/short variant provides some flexibility but remains within listed securities.

Scale is the primary differentiator. Managing a small asset base permits the firm to operate in the mid- and small-cap segments of the industrial and energy-transition universe where most institutional value capital cannot allocate meaningfully, giving Francis a permanent structural advantage in sourcing mispriced situations.
