The Grace Cottage Foundation was established in 1994 as a 501(c)(3) fundraising arm for Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, Vermont. The hospital itself traces its origins to 1949, when a local doctor converted his home into a clinic. The foundation's sole mission is to secure the long-term viability of this rural healthcare institution through donor cultivation, capital campaigns, and endowment management. Major benefactors include Lyman Orton and Janice Izzi, owners of The Vermont Country Store, who contributed $1 million, and Joe and Terry Pollio, who provided a $5 million challenge pledge for the construction of a new primary care clinic building. The foundation's endowment, estimated by Altss at $10 million to $25 million, funds hospital operations, equipment purchases, and facility upgrades. Unlike diversified institutional endowments, Grace Cottage's assets are concentrated on a single operating entity — a 19-bed critical-access hospital and its adjoining family health clinic on Grafton Road in Townshend. The hospital provides emergency care, inpatient services, laboratory, radiology, and a full primary care practice. Its reimbursement mix is heavily weighted toward Medicare and Medicaid, consistent with its rural safety-net role. The Windham Foundation, a regional philanthropic entity, has also provided grants to support hospital operations. Board governance includes seasoned investment and business professionals. Wendell Perkins, a CFA charterholder, serves as Vice President, while Carl Ferenbach — who co-founded the Boston-based hedge fund Highfields Capital Management in 1998 and retired after building it into a multi-billion-dollar firm — holds emeritus status. The Pollio family's 2020–2022 capital campaign gift of $5 million, structured as a matching challenge, represented the largest single philanthropic commitment in the hospital's history. That campaign supported construction of a new primary care clinic building completed in 2023. The foundation's structure is unusual among endowments: it does not make grants to external organizations. Every dollar raised or disbursed from the endowment stays within Grace Cottage Hospital's operating ecosystem. There is no separate investment office, no outside manager roster, and no diversified portfolio strategy in the traditional sense. The foundation functions as a captive fundraising department with an endowment overlay, making it structurally closer to a hospital development office than to a conventional family or independent foundation.
