Inatai is legally and operationally separate from both Pivotal Ventures and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Pivotal Ventures is a limited liability company focused on advocacy and philanthropic programs, while the Gates Foundation is a charitable trust. Inatai exists solely to invest Melinda French Gates's personal assets and does not comingle capital with either entity.

Inatai exclusively takes LP positions in external funds. The firm does not participate in direct investments, co-investments, or SPVs. Its mandate is to identify and commit capital to third-party managers across public equities, private equity, venture capital, and real assets, making it a pure allocator.

French Gates has signaled that backing underrepresented managers is a priority for Inatai's investment strategy. The firm has allocated to funds like Boston-based Arctaris Impact Investors and has committed to placing capital with emerging managers, particularly those led by women and people of color, as part of its fund-selection criteria.
