Barry S. Sternlicht established Starwood Capital in 1991. JAWS Estates Capital functions as the family office that manages proceeds from those real estate and hospitality holdings. The structure gives the office a permanent capital base rather than finite fund cycles. JAWS deploys capital across early-stage, growth, and private equity opportunities in consumer internet, technology, PropTech, and enterprise software. It executes direct investments and co-investments alongside Starwood Capital Ventures. Confirmed positions include Velo3D, where former JAWS entity Jaws Spitfire merged in 2021, and ongoing SPAC vehicles such as Jaws Mustang. The office maintains geographic reach across North America, Europe, and Asia through both public equities and private holdings. The investment team comprises five professionals based in Miami and New York. Matthew Walters directs private investments and sits on the Starwood Capital Ventures investment committee. Sam Berger rejoined the firm in August 2024 after serving as Chief of Staff to Sternlicht at Starwood Capital. Chris Ashman joined in 2024 from FJ Management to manage the public and private manager portfolio. Adjacent vehicles include the Barry and Mimi Sternlicht Foundation.
