Potomac Health Foundation was established in December 2009 as a private, independent foundation following the merger of Potomac Community Hospital with Sentara Healthcare, a Virginia not-for-profit corporation. The founding board included Howard L. Greenhouse, a director of the former hospital whose name now anchors the foundation's signature large-grant program. The organization operates with three full-time staff and an all-volunteer board, keeping structural overhead minimal so that assets flow primarily to grantees. Strategy is grantmaking-only, focused on improving health for the medically underserved. The foundation does not make program-related investments, direct venture bets, or fund commitments. Its geographic footprint is tightly bound to eastern Prince William County along with adjacent communities in southeast Fairfax and north Stafford Counties — a service area of roughly three partial Virginia counties. In the 2023-2024 cycle, the Howard L. Greenhouse Large Grants program awarded fourteen new grants totaling $899,731 across forty-seven active grants, placing recent annual deployment near the $900,000 mark. Annual reports list grants by recipient and amount but do not break out total assets-under-management. Board leadership reflects deep operational ties to the legacy hospital system. Chair Marion M. Wall runs Potomac Wall Insurance Agency in addition to her board role. Vice Chair Dr. Carol Shapiro serves as Medical Director at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, and board director Kathie Johnson is the center's President.
