Sandbar Investments was founded in 1995 by Barry Smorgon, OAM, following the divestment of Smorgon Consolidated Industries. The firm redeploys proceeds from those Australian industrial operations into a diversified book that includes early-stage venture, private equity, commercial property and select alternative assets. Allocations span venture capital at seed and early stages as well as later expansion rounds. The office participates in direct co-investments and fund commitments, with documented positions in Synthetix, Thorchain, Coti and Illuvium. Geographic reach centers on Australia while extending to North American real assets through holdings such as the Camas residential property. The team comprises Barry Smorgon as executive chairman and Darren Smorgon as managing director. Darren previously worked as a partner at CHAMP Private Equity. The firm maintains two Sydney offices and holds memberships in the Australian Investment Council and Social Ventures Australia. Succession and governance rest within the Smorgon family, with parallel philanthropic vehicles including the Sandra and Barry Smorgon Family Charitable Trust kept separate from investment operations.
