Valinor is a completely separate legal entity from The Carlyle Group, established to manage David M. Rubenstein's personal capital. As Rubenstein has transitioned to a non-executive co-chairman role at Carlyle, his office operates under strict compliance firewalls to avoid any conflict with Carlyle's institutional deal flow, though the network of former Carlyle professionals informs Valinor's sourcing and due diligence.

The office pursues a flexible, multi-asset-class mandate that includes direct minority equity stakes, hedge fund seeding and limited-partner commitments, opportunistic real estate, and public-market securities. The mix is driven by Rubenstein's personal interests and has historically skewed toward financial services, media, and cultural-heritage-related companies, with a geographic focus on North America and Western Europe.

David M. Rubenstein retains ultimate investment authority. He is supported by a lean internal team — widely believed to number fewer than a dozen professionals — and relies on a curated network of external consultants and former Carlyle colleagues for deal sourcing and operational due diligence rather than maintaining a large in-house research staff.

Philanthropic giving is conducted through The David Rubenstein Family Foundation, an entirely separate entity that focuses on historical preservation, education, and medical research. Valinor does not serve as a conduit for the foundation's grants or program-related investments, preserving a clean division between for-profit investing and charitable capital.
