Walter Financial was established in 1987 to oversee the Somers family fortune generated by Walter Surface Technologies, an industrial abrasives company started in 1952. Pierre Somers leads the Walter Group as chairman and CEO while Isabelle Somers serves as board chair of the newly launched Walter Capital Management. The office allocates across private equity, venture capital, real estate, private credit, hedge funds, and direct co-investments. Confirmed positions include development capital to Cimpl in 2000 and a minority stake in Quebec funeral-home operator Athos Services Commémoratifs. Geographic reach covers North America and Europe with indicated exposure to South America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The firm targets early-stage and growth companies in sectors such as FinTech, digital health, AgriTech, industrial tech, and energy transition. Assets under management stand at $6.4 billion. The group maintains specialized units for private equity via Walter Capital Partners and venture via Walter Ventures. In October 2024 Walter Capital Management launched with Isabelle Somers as board chair to expand offerings to Canadian investors. No additional offices or employee count are disclosed. Permanent capital allows the office to hold investments without fixed exit timelines. This structure supports long-duration partnerships with founders and external managers while maintaining separation between the family office and the operating business that created the wealth.
