Virtus operates as a multi-boutique holding platform rather than a centralized asset manager. Each affiliated boutique — such as Kayne Anderson Rudnick or Newfleet Asset Management — maintains its own investment process, brand, and portfolio management team. Investment decisions are made at the boutique level, not by a central investment committee, which means strategies can vary significantly across the platform. This federation model is designed to preserve the specialized cultures that Virtus believes drive long-term outperformance.

Investment decisions are decentralized. Each boutique affiliate under Virtus operates with its own chief investment officer and portfolio management team. George R. Aylward serves as President and CEO of the parent company, overseeing capital allocation across boutiques and corporate strategy, but he does not dictate portfolio-level security selection. The parent firm provides distribution, operations, legal, and compliance support.

Virtus has historically been weighted toward public equity and fixed income strategies through its boutique affiliates. In October 2023, the firm expanded its private markets footprint by launching Virtus Private Credit, a dedicated direct lending affiliate (per the firm, October 2023). The platform now includes private credit strategies alongside traditional long-only and multi-asset mandates, though public markets remain the dominant portion of its business.

Virtus was created through a management-led spinout from The Phoenix Companies in 2008. George Aylward, who had been overseeing asset management operations within Phoenix, led a buyout of the division. The new entity went public in 2009 and has grown through a series of acquisitions of majority and minority stakes in independent asset managers (public record).

The platform includes numerous affiliates, several of which are well known in institutional and intermediary channels. Prominent examples include Kayne Anderson Rudnick (growth and quality equities), Newfleet Asset Management (multi-sector fixed income), and Duff & Phelps Investment Management (infrastructure and real assets). Others cover small-cap equities, global strategies, and alternative credit. Each firm retains its name and operational independence.
