The family wealth originated with John J. O'Connor, who founded a securities brokerage in 1932. Over subsequent decades, the family redirected its capital into direct real estate investment, beginning in Calgary and later expanding into the United States. The wealth is now embedded in the property portfolio itself, with no publicly disclosed operating business outside of real estate that generates the family's capital base.
