Investment decisions are made by the management team under LiU Holding AB, led by CEO Johan Lilliecreutz, with close coordination from Linköping University's technology transfer office and the Lead incubator. The firm sources exclusively from Linköping University's internal research pipeline, drawing on faculty inventions, doctoral projects, and ventures incubated at Lead, the on-campus startup hub. This ties its deal flow directly to the university's research output, with pre-vetting by technology transfer officers before investment review.

LiU Invest is neither—it operates as a university holding company, a structure permitted under Swedish law that allows academic institutions to commercialize research through wholly-owned investment entities. Parent company LiU Holding AB controls LiU Invest, and the university is the ultimate beneficiary.

LiU Invest makes only direct equity investments in spin-off companies originating from Linköping University. It does not function as a fund-of-funds or commit capital to external venture capital firms. Co-investments with other university holding companies, such as KTH Holding, are common on a deal-by-deal basis.
